Following study at Chester College in order to obtain a B Ed degree in Primary Education, Stephen was employed as a Y6 teacher at St James' CE Primary in Lower Darwen where he stayed for six years, progressing in his career to teach many year groups and gain a management responsibility including Acting Deputy Headship.

From this role, Stephen became Deputy Headteacher at St Johns CE and Methodist Primary School in Brinscall where he stayed for four years, undertaking the role of Acting Headteacher for two terms. In September 2003, Stephen became Headteacher at St Peter's CE Primary in Chorley, where he worked with the staff team to develop the school from a vulnerable position to become a good school.

With the school set to progress well, Stephen looked for an opportunity to experience something different with new challenges. This led him work at Bolton Boys' Independent School a leading independent school within the Northwest. This role combined the traditional role of Headteacher in a multi-faith school with a broader experience of working as part of the SMT of a through school from 7-18 years.
